Peeling Bathtub Refinishing in Downers Grove, IL: Removing a Failed Coating

The homeowners purchased this Downers Grove, Illinois, home about three years ago. The bathtub had already been refinished when they moved in. Later, the white coating began peeling, exposing the blue surface underneath. Eco Tub Restoration removed the failing coating and refinished the existing bathtub in white using our pour-on enamel method. This project illustrates an important part of bathtub refinishing: the condition of the surface underneath the new finish matters just as much as its appearance.

What the peeling tells us—and what it doesn’t

Peeling means the existing coating is separating from the surface beneath it. However, peeling alone does not tell us which product was previously used or exactly why it failed.

The homeowners’ three years in the house also do not establish the coating’s age. It was already there when they purchased the property.

As refinishing professionals, we focus on assessing what remains on the bathtub and preparing a suitable surface for the next finish.

Why another coat is not enough

A new finish relies on the surface underneath it staying firmly attached. If an older layer is already lifting, covering it does not restore its bond to the bathtub. The new finish can come away with the old layer.

That is why removing a failing coating is an essential part of a project like this. Sanding the visible edges smooth and covering everything in white would leave the underlying problem unresolved.

What our project photos show

The first photo documents the old white coating being removed, with the blue surface exposed underneath.

The second photo shows the bathtub after coating removal and before the new finish was applied. This stage is less dramatic than the finished result, but it is central to the restoration process.

The final photo shows the bathtub with its new white finish. The existing tub stayed in place, and the surrounding wall tile was retained.

For this restoration, we used our pour-on enamel process rather than a sprayed finish.

Can a previously refinished bathtub be refinished again?

Yes, a previously refinished bathtub can often be restored again. The important questions are whether the bathtub itself is suitable for refinishing and what must be removed or repaired before applying the new coating.

A peeling finish does not automatically mean the entire bathtub needs replacement. It does mean the existing coating needs attention before another finish is applied.

Does refinishing fix every bathtub problem?

No. Refinishing renews the surface; it does not correct plumbing leaks, movement in the bathtub, or concealed damage behind the surrounding tile.

If those issues are present, they need to be assessed separately. The right recommendation depends on the condition of the bathtub and the bathroom—not just how the finish looks.

What should you do if your bathtub starts peeling?

Avoid covering the damaged area with another paint or touch-up product before the existing finish has been assessed.

Send us a full photo of the bathtub and close-ups of the peeling areas. Let us know whether it has been refinished before and whether you have noticed any leaks or cracks. Photos help us discuss the likely scope, while an on-site assessment confirms what preparation is needed.
