A bathtub that had been refinished several years earlier was peeling again. Laura, a homeowner in La Grange, IL 60525, contacted Eco Tub Restoration to assess the failing finish and refinish the tub again.
The earlier refinishing had been arranged by the contractor handling her bathroom remodel and completed by another company. Over time, sections of that coating began to lift away, leaving the tub with a visibly patchy surface.
The problem: an old coating was coming away
The before photo shows large areas of missing coating across the bottom of the bathtub, with the underlying surface exposed. The remaining white finish and the exposed areas created an uneven appearance.

During preparation, our technician found that the old coating had very weak adhesion. The technician’s assessment was that inadequate surface preparation during the previous refinishing had contributed to that weak bond. This was an assessment of this particular tub, not a diagnosis of every peeling finish.
What our technician did
The work addressed the existing coating before a new finish was applied:
- Removed the old coating. Our technician stripped the previous material from the tub.
- Prepared the surface for refinishing. With the old material removed, the technician prepared the surface for the new coating.
- Reglazed the bathtub. The tub received a new white finish.
- Replaced the caulk around the tub. The project also included removal and replacement of the existing caulking.
This was a bathtub refinishing project, not a tile-reglazing or full bathroom-remodeling project. The surrounding tile shown in the photographs was not the surface being refinished.
The refinished surface
The second photograph shows the tub with an even-looking white finish where the old coating had been peeling.
