When Robert contacted Eco Tub Restoration about his daughter’s home in Lincoln Park, Chicago, he wanted to improve the existing bathtub while keeping a feature that mattered to him: its slip-resistant bottom.
According to Robert, the previous finish had lasted several years before it began peeling near the drain. Other areas of the bathtub were also damaged during a tile replacement project. The goal was to restore the finish while preserving the textured bathing surface.
Peeling Around the Drain and Damage From Tile Work
The close-up photo shows the old white coating missing around the drain, with additional small areas of damage nearby. These spots interrupted the appearance of the bathtub and left the surface beneath the coating exposed.

For this project, our work went beyond covering the visible marks. We removed the old coating and prepared the bathtub before applying the new finish.
Removing the Old Coating and Preparing the Bathtub
Our team removed the previous refinishing material and prepared the surface according to Eco Tub Restoration’s refinishing process.
Preparation is an important part of restoring a previously refinished bathtub. A new coating needs a suitable surface underneath it; simply covering an older, peeling layer does not restore that layer’s adhesion.
After preparation, we applied a new water-resistant enamel finish. The result was a renewed white surface, including the area around the drain where the earlier coating had peeled.
Preserving the Slip-Resistant Bottom
Robert specifically asked us to preserve the bathtub’s slip-resistant bottom, and we retained that feature as part of the refinishing work.
This detail mattered just as much as the appearance of the new finish. The project was not only about making the bathtub look better—it was also about keeping the textured surface the family wanted.
If your bathtub has an existing textured bottom, mention it when requesting an estimate. It is an important detail to discuss before refinishing begins.
A Renewed Finish for This Lincoln Park Home
The before-and-after close-ups show the change around the drain: the exposed patches in the old coating were replaced by a continuous white finish. The existing bathtub remained in place, and its slip-resistant bottom was preserved.

For Robert, the work was another step in helping his daughter improve her home without replacing the bathtub.
